Mom's Advice

We are in the process of buying all the furniture for baby's room and it seems like the one thing I am unsure about is the need for a glider/rocking chair. I am mostly wondering...is it really worth the investment or is it something that I could easily live without?

Any Mom's out there with experience want to weigh in here?

I did not get one and have never missed it. Lucy would fall asleep with us walking with her or when I nursed her when she was younger and now we put her in the crib and she falls asleep on her own. They might be nice to have and I probably would have used it, but I don't think it's all that important and we were fine without one.

I think it kinda depends on your parenting style/philosophy too

I used my glider every evening, singing a song before bed, even in the dark - it was our bedtime routine. Now my girls are older, and I still end the day with a special glide, where we talk about the day, fears, joy, upcoming events and past happenings. I still can't part with it - it is a most important part of our world. Plus they're soooooooo comfortable for nursing......

I have loved having mine. With my first boy, nursing took a long time, and it was such a blessing to have such a comfy peaceful place to spend so much time with him. With my second, I hardly used it at all for nursing, but it became a special place for holding him before bed and reading books to both kids. Now with the third, I am really looking forward to having a place to sit and rock the time away.... they are not required, but can be really nice.

I did not have one, but I did have an old La-Z-Boy. You might want to consider getting a comfy chair since you'll be sitting there for a while and logging a lot of time there, too.

So, a chair you could use later in regular decor is an option, too. Good question to ask, Janet!

I don't have one b/c of space, but have always enjoyed using gliders at others' homes. They are just so comfortable and perfect for nursing, reading books, soothing a baby, etc.

Oh, and whatever you end up buying, make sure you sit in it first. Not all gliders/rockers are comfortable (sadly, the coolest looking ones seem to be the least comfortable).

I have an old hand-me-down glider. Like Tali I was in there an awful lot nursing Savanna. It took a long time. Then as Savanna grew up we've used it to rock her, read to her, say bedtime prayers etc. I'm finding that I've pretty much not used it for Lily yet. It just sits there. But I'm sure we'll be using again. So basically I agree, it's not necessary, it's a nice to have.

Here is a grammy weighing in... I still have the rocker in which I rocked my three children (one of whom was Seth!)and I have such wonderful memories of holding my babies, rocking them and just being at peace with them in that special chair. They grow up soooo fast,(you won't believe it until you experience it),but it is worth it to have that special time to look back on of rocking and singing to and just bonding with your little one. I also found rocking to be a great soother, for both baby and me!! My vote is to get the rocker/glider.
Love to you both and Little Meeper!

Well, I would have to agree with Mom Remsnyder! Ken bought a rocker for me as a first year anniversary gift and 3 months later, I loved having it to rock Ryan, then Jared, then Sarah, and even Matt when he came as a little 5 year old, who loved to be rocked! Now I use it often to rock our grandbabies, read to them, and just snuggle on! It's one of our favorite pieces of furniture we have ever purchased.

Love you and excited for this little to arrive!

Every mother should have a rocking chair - is part of the rites of childhood to be rocked, and a mother's privelege to rock the child.

Although I never really rocked my babies to sleep as my husband and I wanted them to learn to fall asleep on their own, I definately recommend a glider. They are a very comfortable place to nurse or feed the baby a bottle. Also, it is so nice to have a special place for a mommy and her baby. I spent many hours reading and singing to the babies during their awake time.

i have the rocking chair my mom got when she had me. i did not use it all that much with either girlie - not sure what will happen with our soon to arrive girlie, but it was nice to have when i did. i think i like it more for the sake of rocking my girls in the same chair my mom rocked me in. : ) so they are nice, but def not a mandatory thing - or at least that is how it was for me. : )
but as has been said - it is diff for every mommy.

You will want to be comfortable when nursing, whatever they chair may be. Besides nursing, we also use ours for our night time routine for family worship. I glide while we read and sing to our little one.
It was hard for us to fork over the expense gliders cost. So we bought one off of Craig's List for really cheap. I found many listed from mom's of one child who don't use it anymore. So you might want to check for slightly used ones.

if your baby is fussy and you are exhausted, it's easier to rock than walk. Speaking from experience :-)

I love my glider and ottoman set ... I've used it for all 4 of our kiddos, and as many have mentioned it's really nice to have something comfy for nursing. We never rocked our babies to sleep, but I still enjoy using it to nurse and rock them at other times! And when we aren't using it for our babies in the nursery, it makes a nice addition to any living/family room.
If you do decide to get one ... I would recommend getting a nice one so that it holds up well. Ours has lasted for 7 years and still works great (although it has seen some some sharpie marker, crayons and pens ... gotta love those magic erasers)!

Have fun nursery shopping!
Looking forward to meeting your little girlie!

I still use mine and my daughter is 2. It's great when reading before bed and it was used a ton when she was an infant. I have a glider.

The rocker & ottoman set Wardell's mom gave us was truly one of the best and most useful presents ever! I have fallen asleep in it many nights after putting her down in her crib and not having "the strength" to walk back to our room! ;)Ariana usually isn't rocked to sleep but I fed her on it and as one mommy mentioned, we have a special night time rock regardless of whether or not gets fed. We pray, I sing a song and put her down. Thats her routine for bedtime and she seems to love it! We asked for a neutral color so that we can use it for the other babies too, so I know I will be rocking away in a comfy rocker for at least the next 2 years! =)
